Actor J.K. Simmons might best be known as the man who brought J. Jonah Jameson to life in director Sam Raimi's Spider-Man Trilogy, but he's taking on another beloved comic book character. He will be introduced as Commissioner Gordon in next year's JUSTICE LEAGUE movie.
While speaking with Entertainment Tonight, Simmons not only teased a larger role for him in future movies, but he is campaigning for a more badass Gordon than seen in previous movies.
"If you look at the history of the character, In the comics, he's a pretty tough guy. He's not just this sort of comic relief, he's not just anything, he's a part of that universe. And in the first film that we're currently shooting, my part is not as big as it will be in some of the future films, the Batman film. You never know for sure what's going to be made, what's not going to be made, but the plan is... if that indeed comes to fruition, is that there will be more Commissioner Gordon in the future. And I have absolutely no idea, zero idea, but I'm lobbying right now: let Commissioner Gordon be a badass."
Not much is known about Gordon's role in JUSTICE LEAGUE but it sounds like the solo BATMAN movie is already shaping its cast as Ben Affleck will return, Simmons sounds like he'll be on board and Jeremy Irons has already teased his involvement, reprising Alfred, in the solo BATMAN film. Just add Jared Leto as the Joker and fans will be lining up to buy tickets right now.
JUSTICE LEAGUE is currently filming in London and releases on November 17, 2017. The untitled BATMAN solo movie is still in development and perhaps its official release date will be announced at San Diego Comic-Con 2016 next week.
