Reactions to LUKE CAGE, IRON FIST and THE DEFENDERS Reveals at SDCC 2016

San Diego Comic-Con is in the rearview mirror (sniff, sniff) and now that all the excitement from the many reveals has settled... let's react to them.

During the Marvel TV panel, LUKE CAGE Showrunner Cheo Coker was asked why the story of Luke Cage was so important to him, and the usual answer of a black kid reading black superhero comics aside, Coker dropped the quote of the Con for me.

“The world is ready for a bulletproof black man.”

This was met with huge applause from the crowd. Along with talk of the setting of Harlem being a character in it's own right and what Coker called the “Wu-Tang-ification” of the Marvel Universe with regards to the musical direction of the show. It was important and great to see Marvel is totally up for telling different kinds of stories, albeit through the filter of a superhero-filled universe. An interesting little point here, one that I'm a total sucker for, Coker mentioned that all the LUKE CAGE episodes are named after Gang Starr songs. Now I'll admit I had to Google them, but the whole thing ended with me listening to Wu-Tang Clan's debut album in its entirety. I can't wait for this show! I've been waiting for it since the moment we first saw Luke in JESSICA JONES.

A few words on the LUKE CAGE teaser — I love it! From the Ol' Dirty Bastard soundtrack to the fact it's essentially just one sequence — likely taken from an early episode — showing not only Luke's powers but just how badass he is, it gives me nothing but confidence in the direction this show is going in.

Now, I had hoped Finn Jones may appear at during the LUKE CAGE portion of the panel in some way but alas no. Mike Colter had given away back in January that Danny Rand / Iron Fist had been cast, a full two months before Marvel's official announcement. Seemed to me this meant Jones had shot some scenes for LUKE CAGE similar to how Luke had first appeared in JESSICA JONES.

Though I still believe that to be true, looks as though Marvel is keeping tight lipped about the prospect of a “Heroes for Hire” crossover just for now. Jones did appear, however, in the form of a video from the set of IRON FIST, which is currently filming for its 2017 release. Although the video was once again just for those in attendance, the IRON FIST teaser he introduced was not.

The levels of excitement I felt as each of these teasers dropped was palpable. When Marvel and Netflix announced their partnership to create The Defenders universe of Netflix shows, I never imagined we'd get them all in such quick succession and with such great quality.

Huge fan of THE DEFENDERS teaser. Huge fan of Nirvana, and the prospect of Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage and Iron Fist all being on-screen at the same time thrills me. On Netflix, Marvel has struck gold with a medium for telling a different kind of story to the films — one that's of equal importance and quality. I don't think I'm overselling THE DEFENDERS when I say it's going to be The Avengers of television, blowing the crossovers between the CW superhero shows out of the water.

Still, Marvel TV had a lot to say for itself this Comic-Con and it's looking to put up the fight of it's life against DC's super lineup of shows on The CW. Bring on this fall!
