Upon Further Review: BATMAN V. SUPERMAN Ultimate Edition Should Have Been the Cut Released in Theaters
Right off the bat this needs to be said... this is the cut of the movie that should have been released in theaters instead of the shorter cut which brought in $872 million in the worldwide box office. Just speculating a bit, but if the longer version was the theatrical release then the movie might have had a better chance at hitting $1 billion worldwide. It's kind of rare to say a longer version of a movie is a better version than seen in a theater. Most of the time the theatrical release is the ideal cut.
The reason for this is simple, the extended cut has a better flow with its pacing as well as its story. While the movie still has some of its same flaws as the theatrical cut, the longer version may not have been as critically panned since there is more clarity in many scenes that were cut short for its theater release.
It's almost like important plot points were cut short or out of it originally while a decision was also made to keep the many Zack Snyder-style scene where there's a slower pace with an emotional musical score and no dialogue which becomes is too much and drawn out in the movie. These scenes can still be cut a bit shorter to allow for even better pacing and flow even in the Ultimate Edition.
Not sure who is at fault for instructing that so much be cut out, but that person (probably a studio executive) should now be ashamed of that instruction because, now in retrospect after seeing the Ultimate Edition, it hurt the movie more than helped it.
Bottom line, if you saw BATMAN V. SUPERMAN in the theater and you weren't as happy as you hoped for when leaving the theater then you should set aside three hours to watch the Ultimate Edition. It's worth another viewing.
If you can go into another, and lengthy, viewing of BATMAN V. SUPERMAN without all the pre-set opinions you may already have after seeing it in the theater... you might enjoy the movie just a little bit more upon further review. It's not a game changing cut of the movie, but it's an improvement.
