If you're not a comic book reader then you might not have great knowledge of CAPTAIN MARVEL. At first Captain Marvel was a he; a Kree alien known as Mar-Vell. Carol Danvers, who had a rank of Major in the United States Air Force, had a chance meeting with Mar-Vell which led to her gaining her powers in an origin story that is very similar to that of Hal Jordan in GREEN LANTERN. This led to Danvers to becoming Ms. Marvel. More recently, in July 2012, in the Marvel comic book universe, Danvers takes on the title of being the new Captain Marvel.
Now that Brie Larson is confirmed to be Danvers in the title role of Marvel Studios' CAPTAIN MARVEL movie, fans will soon see the powerful hero on the big screen. She is widely believed to be appearing first in 2018's AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR with her solo movie hitting theaters less than a year later on March 8, 2019.
In the meantime, CAPTAIN MARVEL is still in development with writers Nicole Perlman (GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY) and Meg LeFauve (INSIDE OUT) penning and plotting its script since April 2015. In October 2015, LeFauve said how figuring out Danvers' power-set was proving to be a tough task, but since then there hasn't been much of anything said or heard about the development of CAPTAIN MARVEL.
Until now.
Perlman has gone on record on the podcast 'Any Time with Vin Forte' (via CBM) and has confirmed something very important about the movie... Danvers' origin story will be adapted for the big screen and get some tweaks to not mirror the origin story in GREEN LANTERN.
"I don’t think I’ve ever had a project where I’ve been more mindful about the impact that it could have and the importance of it. [Captain Marvel is] such an incredibly kick-ass character and [comic book writer] Kelly Sue DeConnick did a great run with her story arc recently. But here’s the thing, if you were just going to do a straight adaptation of the comics, her origin story is very similar to Green Lantern. And obviously, that’s not what we want to do. There’s a lot of reinvention that needs to happen. And also, she’s her own person and she’s a great character. We have to be aware of what’s happened in other Marvel film and makes sure that her particular storyline is unique and fun and also fits in within this world that’s going on at the same time. It’s a little bit of an interesting story gauntlet. It’s been good to have a partner. It’s been an incredible experience. If we can pull it off it could be an incredibly important but also really fun and kick-ass superhero film.”
Sure, some hardcore comic book fans will be annoyed about changing Danvers' origin story for the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but this is probably for the best.
