Director David Ayer Opens Up About Things Not Seen in SUICIDE SQUAD

***THIS POST CONTAINS SPOILERS FOR SUICIDE SQUAD.***

You've probably read online about how Warner Bros. meddled with SUICIDE SQUAD during post-production. If you haven't read any of that dirty laundry, click here and here. And you've probably already heard about how lots of Joker's scene, which made Jared Leto a bit unhappy, were cut out of the movie to the point where the Joker really wasn't needed in the film outside of Harley Quinn's flashbacks (click here to read that post).

What you haven't heard are the things from the movie that didn't make it from writer and director David Ayer. Well, Ayer has opened up to Empire about some things that didn't make it but actually seem to make the movie better if Warner Bros. executives hadn't stuck their nose in places they shouldn't.

Here's some bullet points of the things Ayer disclosed about SUICIDE SQUAD:

  • Ayer said the original script called for the movie to start in Belle Reve with each villain having his/her own flashback remembering things in their past while they sit in their respective cell.
  • The original script also begin with more of June Moone in archeology-exploring-mode and finding the ancient tomb where she becomes possessed by the Enchantress.
  • There is no R-rated cut of the film, nor was it ever intended.
  • The Joker kills Robin and, reacting to his sidekick's death, Batman smashes out the Joker's teeth which is why he has metal teeth (or a 'grill') and Batman locks him up in Arkham. While incarcerated, this leads to the Joker's seduction of Dr. Harleen Quinzel.
  • Also while in Arkham, the Joker tattoos 'DAMAGED' to his forehead as a message reminder to Batman that he has in fact damaged him by killing Robin; as well as signaling that Batman has also damaged the Joker's teeth.
  • The theatrical cut is referred by Ayer as the "dossier cut" with Amanda Waller going through the intros of each villain as you saw in the movie. (We can only assume that this is part of the studio's request during post-production.)
  • Ayer says to not call the Joker's appearance in the movie a cameo. (Again, we can only assume it wasn't supposed to be such a small role because Leto says a lot was cut out.)
  • Rescuing Waller was always the main mission of the movie.
