There seems to be a trend when it comes to Warner Bros. and DC super hero movie releases. There's lots of hype surrounding it but when the reviews start to roll-in the critics aren't happy with the final product. Then the blame game starts, which is absolutely ridiculous because they go after critics who are just doing their job instead of blaming studio executives who seem to be the common issue at Warner Bros. as stories of meddling come to light.
Regardless of who is to blame, the DCEU has had a rough start with the release of MAN OF STEEL, BATMAN V. SUPERMAN (27-percent) and now SUICIDE SQUAD (29-percent, as of the publishing of this post) not being able to get review score averages on RottenTomatoes higher than 55-percent received by MAN OF STEEL.
[You can read DailySuperHero.com's spoiler-free review by clicking here. Hint: It's not a good review because there's too much studio meddling with the story throughout and we can only hope for an extended cut at some point.]
Anyway, so what does some of the main cast of SUICIDE SQUAD think about the negative reviews? Here's what they're saying, via DigitalSpy...
Jay Hernandez (El Diablo)
"Yeah I am bothered about it, I think it sucks, obviously we worked hard and tried to give the fans what they wanted. It's weird that some of the criticism I heard was that it was 'too much like a comic book'..."
Joel Kinneman (Rick Flag)
"You know, of course you want critical acclaim, of course, but what matters is what the fans think. We're really proud of this film, we loved making it, everybody on the film has become really close friends and this is like a work of love and I hope the fans like it."
Karen Fukuharha (Katana)
"[We] honestly made it for the hardcore DC fans."
Here's more from the cast and the director, via Reuters...
Cara Delevingne (June Moone and Enchantress)
"The critics have been absolutely horrific, they're really, really horrible. You know, I just don't think they like superhero movies this movie isn't perfect, [it was made for the fans]."
Will Smith (Deadshot)
"I think people had expectations that may have been different, but I'm excited for the fans to get to vote."
Director David Ayer
"I made the movie for real people who live in the real world. I made the movie for people who actually love movies and go and see movies."
Everyone is entitled to their opinions, just like critics and reviewers, and let it be said that every comic book movie is made for the fans. So using this as an excuse is some weak tea. Plus, is Delevingne seriously that oblivious to the fact that critics loved Christopher Nolan's DARK KNIGHT TRILOGY and they love Marvel Studios films? It's definitely not an issue of critics not liking super hero movies, nor is there any conspiracy theory of bribes by other studios, it's an issue with a studio releasing a subpar product in today's 'Golden Age of Super Hero Movies.'
Sure, the actors and director will fight through the negativity of reviews for a film they all worked really hard on. But let's not forget that Warner Bros. execs allegedly meddled during production after the reception fallout for BATMAN V. SUPERMAN and they deserve lots of finger-pointing more than anyone else.
