There's No Update on a Solo BLACK WIDOW Movie But Scarlett Johansson Still Wants it to Happen

Marvel Studios has a full schedule right now as they've begun producing three films to be released per year. This is through 2019 so the studio doesn't have much space to add any more additional films to their Phase 3 slate after adding both ANT-MAN AND THE WASP as well as SPIDER-MAN: HOMECOMING. Initially, the studio announced their Phase 3 lineup back in October 2014 without the ANT-MAN sequel and before the announcement of Spider-Man coming into their Marvel Cinematic Universe.

This is unfortunate because fans, as well as Scarlett Johansson, really want a solo BLACK WIDOW movie to become a reality. While speaking with Variety, Johansson said she still really wants the chance at a solo hero for her character.

"I would like for it to happen under the right circumstances. I think there’s a lot of opportunity to mine that story line. She’s got a really rich origins story. There’s a lot of places you can go — you can bring it back to Russia. You could explore the Widow program. There’s all kinds of stuff that you could do with it. You could really uncover the identity of who this person is, where she comes from and where she’s part of."

Johansson goes on to say how she does in fact have conversations about a solo BLACK WIDOW movie with Marvel Studios' braintrust often.

"I talked to them about it often. It would have to fit in the idea of where they want to go. I’m invested in that character. Marvel is greatly invested in that character. If I did it, I’d have to do it while. I still actually wanted to wear a skin-tight catsuit. I don’t know how much longer that’s going to be."
