BOBA FETT Standalone Star Wars Movie Would Have Come Out Before HAN SOLO Until it Lost its Director

Let's take a moment to remember back to Star Wars Celebration 2015 when director Josh Trank was supposed to join ROGUE ONE: A STAR WARS STORY director Garth Edwards on stage for a big panel. At the 11th hour, Trank did not show and it was said due to an "illness" at that time. Shortly after Star Wars fans learned Trank was removed from a mystery Star Wars standalone movie project.

That project has been revealed, via EW, to be the BOBA FETT solo movie. Trank was reportedly removed because of the reported issues he had during the production of Fox's 2015 flop, the FANTASTIC FOUR reboot. That film, as well as BOBA FETT, was produced by Simon Kinberg who more than likely told Lucasfilm to get Trank off the movie due to his alleged behavior during the production of the reboot.

Fast-forward to today and Lucasfilm head Kathleen Kennedy revealed to Entertainment Weekly that BOBA FETT was indeed going to be the next standalone film following ROGUE ONE. She also revealed that at Star Wars Celebration 2015 a BOBA FETT sizzle reel was ready to debut at the panel but it was all scrapped at the last moment because of Trank and his behind the scenes issues; scrapping the entire movie, for the moment and pushing the HAN SOLO standalone movie ahead on the production schedule.

EW wrote:

"After the release of the new film, the Star Wars braintrust will map out the further reaches of the galaxy. Among the titles that have been considered is a Boba Fett/bounty hunter movie that director Josh Trank was hired to make before he dropped out following the troubled production of his Fantastic Four reboot. It came so close to being officially announced, Lucasfilm even prepped a teaser reel to show at Star Wars Celebration in spring of 2015, sources tell EW. At the last minute, the split with Trank backburnered the project."

With all due respect to Trank, it is very sad to see a promising young director go from helming CHRONICLE to falling off the rails so quickly, but that's how things can happen in Hollywood when your have the pressure of millions of dollars and studio executives on your shoulders. At least this happened at the prefect time because the last thing any Star Wars fan wants to see is a failed movie starring Boba Fett.

Maybe the BOBA FETT movie will get a second life and get back into development in the coming years, but as of right now it is patiently waiting to get a production green light from Disney and Lucasfilm.
