Seeing as how DEADPOOL made nearly $800 million in the worldwide box office, it seems logical to say Fox is right to stick with Reynolds' wishes to keeps things small, raunchy and maintain what was already proven to work so well. Right now, Fox is reportedly in talks with JOHN WICK director David Leitch for DEADPOOL 2.
When Reynolds renegotiated his contract with Fox, after the huge success of the first movie (read: time to get some back end box office cash), he was reportedly given more power and influence to continue to guide the Merc With a Mouth's franchise. The actor recently spoke with GQ and disclosed that he in fact has full control of the tone and character in DEADPOOL.
"I know when I need to exert control, and I know when I need to let go of it. I’m not gonna go and sit with Tim Miller and say, “The visual effects of Deadpool need to be done this way.” The man is a visual-effects wizard. But there are character and tone things that I know really well. And I’ve also been with this thing the longest out of anybody, aside from the guys that wrote the comics. Eleven years I’ve been trying [to get DEADPOOL made]..."
So while you might be upset over Miller's departure, Reynolds is the most important piece of the franchise. Not only as portraying Wade Wilson / Deadpool but because Reynolds knows the character and tone better than anyone else outside of maybe the comic book creators. He was also instrumental in helping to craft the marketing campaign for DEADPOOL.
DEADPOOL 2 is set to begin production in early 2017 in Vancouver.
