DOCTOR STRANGE Brings in $85 Million in its U.S. Opening Weekend Which is More Than THOR, CAP and ANT-MAN
Last weekend Marvel's DOCTOR STRANGE opened in 33 markets overseas to the tune of $86 million. This weekend it opened in the U.S. and estimates are in showing that the Marvel Studios' brand is as strong as ever as the good doctor has brought in an estimated $85 million ($84.98M to be totally accurate).
The studios' 14th movie as Dr. Stephen Strange's origin film brought in more in its U.S. box office opening than Marvel's past origin films: THOR ($65.7M), CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE FIRST AVENGER ($65M) and ANT-MAN ($57.2M). DOCTOR STRANGE did fall just short of surpassing the studios' last November movie release for THOR: THE DARK WORLD, which took in $85.7M in 2013.
This is a huge win for Marvel Studios and their biggest for bringing an unknown property to the mainstream since GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY tore up box offices in August 2014 with its $93.4M in its opening weekend in the U.S.
UPDATE: And here's a link to read about how DOCTOR STRANGE has already amassed over $325M in the worldwide box office: DOCTOR STRANGE Brings in $118 Million Overseas and Has Already Surpassed $325 Million Worldwide
