***This post contains SPOILERS for DOCTOR STRANGE.***
DOCTOR STRANGE gave Marvel fans their first look at actor Chiwetel Ejiofor as Karl Mordo in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. During the course of the film, we saw Mordo as a Master of the Mystic Arts but also being somewhat naïve to the true ways of the Sorcerer Supreme, The Ancient One. Once Mordo found out that she was using power from the Dark Dimension, he was very much against it. Mordo didn’t have much time to protest due to some much needed multiverse saving. When Dr. Stephen Strange uses the Eye of Agamotto to mess with time and defy nature, he decides to leave Kamar-Taj. During the post credits sequence, Mordo is seen stealing power from a man who used it to help him walk once again, due to Mordo saying how there are “too many sorcerers.”

Not only was DOCTOR STRANGE an origin story for Dr. Stephen Strange, but it was also an origin story for Mordo, who is a famous comic book villain of the soon to be Sorcerer Supreme.
Baron Mordo, as he is known in the comics, was born in Transylvania and he made his first comic book debut in Strange Tales No. 111 of August 1963. Stan Lee and Steve Ditko created him as a student of The Ancient One. Shortly after Strange arrived, he discovered how Mordo planned to kill The Ancient One. Strange tried to warn The Ancient One, but was easily stopped by Mordo. Unfortunately, The Ancient One was well aware of Mordo’s plan and Strange’s desire to help. Seeing the good in Strange, The Ancient One decided to offer to teach Strange the mystic arts. Mordo was exiled from Kamar-Taj and began his plan of revenge.
Baron Mordo uses the Dark Dimension to make his magic more powerful. He also has been known to be an ally of Dormammu. Like Strange, Mordo can tap into the multiverse and draw energy from it. He studied for years under The Ancient One and as a result, has many of the same abilities as Strange, making him a worth foe. He is particularly skilled at Astral projection and hypnosis. Mordo can also summon demons using black magic. Unlike Strange, Mordo uses black magic to his advantage.
The comic and live action versions of Mordo differ greatly. While the comic book version of Mordo has him trying to kill The Ancient One and become powerful with dark magic, the live action version now has him try to rid the world of sorcerers so that the natural balance of the mystic arts can resume.
Whether or not the MCU version of Mordo will be using black magic to create what he believes to be a better world is unsure, but hopefully our questions will be answered in a sequel down the road.
