There might be a few misconceptions about ROGUE ONE: A STAR WARS STORY. The first is something non-hardcore fans might be confused about and that is how the movie is not directly following STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS. ROGUE ONE is Lucasfilm's first standalone movie which takes place before the events of STAR WARS EPISODE IV: A NEW HOPE.
It's the story of how the plans to the first Death Star were stolen by the Rebel Alliance. With this out of the way, the other misconception is about how big the movie will open. And it will not open as big as last year's record breaking opening for The Force Awakens.
According to the first opening weekend tracking information, via The Hollywood Reporter, ROGUE ONE is projecting for a huge $130 million opening weekend in the U.S., and it is currently trending as high as $150M. This would be the biggest December opening weekend in the U.S. of all-time since last year's STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS opened with $248M. A huge win for both Disney and Lucasfilm mostly due to the fact that, outside of Darth Vader, the characters in ROGUE ONE are all new and being introduced to moviegoers and the Star Wars fan base.
However, ROGUE ONE could open even bigger seeing as how The Force Awakens was initially projected for a $185M – $210M opening weekend last year and it brought in even more box office cash. So our own prediction here at DailySuperHero.com is to estimate that ROGUE ONE could very well bring in approximately $150M and it could even top out near $165M.
Bottom line, it looks like Disney and Lucasfilm have a huge hit on their hands and the franchise is looking stronger than ever before despite the darker, grittier tone of ROGUE ONE compared to all past Star Wars films in the episodic Saga.
