It's been years (literally) that rumors of a movie based on the comic book story arc PLANET HULK have swirled around the Internet. So much so it was borderline annoying because nothing was ever confirmed, while too many websites kept reporting on its possibility. It seemed destined to be another example of not believing everything you read online because those "sources" never panned out.
That was until Marvel Studios actually began developing the third Thor film and brought on director Taika Waititi when then things once again began looking like PLANET HULK could realistically be a part of THOR: RAGNAROK. And the hint became more clear once Hulk was announced to be co-starring in the movie with the God of Thunder.
Over the summer, at San Diego Comic-Con, Marvel brought Hulk's gladiator armor to their booth for all fans to see. Then, earlier this month, a photo of promotional art of THOR: RAGNAROK seen at Brazil's Comic Con Experience hit the web further confirming the influence of PLANET HULK.
Today, more information has been confirmed in the form of the main planet in PLANET HULK, Sakaar, will be in the film by Wahtiti (via TotalFilm, MCUExchange and Collider). We transcribed the following from an image of the TotalFilm article in its print magazine:
"'Sakaar was just an insane, far-off, furutistic place which was the biggest shift for the film and these characters.'
"Sakaar is where Thor will reunite with Mark Ruffalo's Hulk, who has made a name for himself as a gladiator in a plot arc mirroring acclaimed comic series PLANET HULK. Wahtiti's major visual inspiration also came from the comics — more specifically artist Jack Kirby.
"'I was really excited when Kevin and the rest of Marvel jumped on board with the idea to use Kirby as a big influence in the design of the film,' Waititi says. 'What’s really hard is staying authentic.'"
So yeah... it can now be said that PLANET HULK influence is confirmed to be a part of THOR: RAGNAROK, which seems to be the most ambitious of the previous two Thor movies.
THOR: RAGNAROK releases on November 3, 2017.
