Last month, 20th Century Fox and director James Mangold treated several websites to an early preview of actor Hugh Jackman's next Wolverine movie, LOGAN. According to all the sites who attended, the first act of the movie was screened in its entirety.
Here's a round-up of what several sites said about the definitely-not-for-kids R-rated Wolverine movie:
SlashFilm:
"There’s no mistaking Logan as anything other than a Wolverine movie — he unsheathes those adamantium claws in the first few minutes of the film, lest you forget who he is or what he can do — but Logan actually doesn’t feel like your typical Marvel blockbuster. More than anything, it feels like a modern Western with sci-fi elements. That first trailer, set to Johnny Cash’s “Hurt,” seems like a pretty good representation of the film as a whole, at least based on the 30 or so minutes that we saw."
"The footage looked great, taking the gritty wasteland look of the Old Man Logancomics by Mark Millar and Steve McNiven, but not looking nearly as futuristic or apocalyptic as that or Mad Max. Besides the fact that the film is even more violent than 2013’s The Wolverine, it certainly looks like Mangold was deliberately going for more practical action and not relying as much on CG as other X-Men and superhero movies."
"The unique tone of Logan could prove to be one of its biggest strengths as the superhero movie genre as a whole has become increasingly experimental – and experiments like the R-rated superhero comedy of Deadpool have seen such resounding success. Movie fans are arguably looking for comic book adaptations that break the mold and offer a new and/or different experience – which, based on the first 40 minutes, Logan accomplishes. It remains to be seen whether casual filmgoers and X-Men devotees will respond as positively to Jackman’s last Wolverine movie as the early reactions, but Logan certainly sets up a unique standalone entry in the X-Men universe."
io9:
"Logan is dark. Logan is gritty. Logan is all washed-out colors, sand and rust. And for all of that, it works. This is a movie that’s telling a standalone story, but mining our knowledge and affection for the characters and actors to do it. None of this would be as affecting if we hadn’t seen Patrick Stewart and Hugh Jackman in these roles for so long."
LOGAN releases on March 3.
