Back when THE LEGO MOVIE opened in theaters it took in $69 million in its domestic opening weekend. This weekend its spin-off, THE LEGO BATMAN MOVIE, opens in the U.S. and it is tracking as high as $70 million.
Specifically, Deadline is reporting that THE LEGO BATMAN MOVIE is tracking for around a $60 million opening while TheWrap says somewhere between $64 - $70 million.
Not a bad projection for a animated movie with a modest production budget of $80 million when Disney's Pixar is putting out movies like INSIDE OUT for $175 million or how Disney Animation Studios spends $165 million on BIG HERO 6.
With rave reviews coming in for THE LEGO BATMAN MOVIE — and you can read our spoiler-free review by clicking here — word-of-mouth could propel this animated feature to a higher total. As of the publishing of this post, the film is sitting at a 98-percent rating on RottenTomatoes with 48 fresh reviews and just one rotten review, which actually gave the movie a C+ score.
Our own domestic opening prediction for this movie is a bit more ambitious than those other websites. We think it will bring in upward of $75 million and pretty much pay off its entire production budget in the opening domestic weekend haul.
Now to the elephant in the room, which is our potentially too-bold prediction in December that THE LEGO BATMAN MOVIE would make $1.1 billion in the worldwide box office (if MINIONS can do $1B, Lego Batman can too, right?). We still stick to this prediction even though we might be eating some crow when the dust settles and the film's box office run is over. Yet, this is one of those movies that could sustain itself for multiple weeks seeing as how it's a combination of being a Batman movie, a LEGO movie as well as a kids movie.
THE LEGO BATMAN MOVIE opens in U.S. theaters the evening of February 9 and nationwide on February 10.
