It's kind of crazy to think that it's almost been a full year since DEADPOOL released in theaters. Since then, 20th Century Fox released the critical letdown X-MEN: APOCALYPSE and are preparing to unleash the R-rated Wolverine movie LOGAN on fans this March.
DEADPOOL franchise writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick recently spoke with ThePlaylist and touched on topics of the growing movie universe the Merc With a Mouth resides in.
First of all, they debunked a recent rumor that Deadpool may cameo in LOGAN.
"Yeah, that’s not happening,” Rheese said. “The tones are just too different. I’m not sure exactly where that rumor came from... but it’s just not ‘Logan.’ And no, not even an end credit scene.
"Well, when I say the tone doesn’t work, I think the tone will absolutely work if we put those two together. Deadpool always needs a straight man, a foil and Wolverine would be as good a foil as Colossus, just more cantankerous. I just know the ‘Logan’ movie as they conceived it could never have Deadpool in it and work. It just couldn’t, it’s way too serious and way too dark. It’s just not right tonally. It’s really, really different.”
The writers, then, teased the growing Deadpool movie universe and how (hopefully) bringing Hugh Jackman as Wolverine into it could change their current plans for sequels and an X-FORCE movie.
“If you’re looking at ‘Deadpool 2,’ if you’re looking at ‘X-Force,’ if you’re looking at ‘Deadpool 3,’ there’s not necessarily room for [another] team-up movie [with Wolverine]. I think it does create real scheduling and universe issues and something that could be ironed out, but it would need to be ironed out. I don’t think any of us operated under the assumption that it would be even possible to do a Deadpool/Wolverine thing so we just haven’t planned for it, it’s still not in the plan, but if it were to happen it would require a hard look at the overall architecture of our storylines.
"... Ryan’s making a hard push to make that happen, and hopefully the public gets behind it and we can all convince Hugh to put the claws on one more time."
Jackman said that he is now hesitant to retire as Wolverine after LOGAN, which was his original plan. This is mostly due to his close friendship with Ryan Reynolds and partly because of the pressure Reynolds is putting on Jackman to not retire just yet so a team-up movie with Deadpool and Wolverine can be made. This team-up movie could legitimately be Fox's first ever $1 billion Marvel franchise movie. Although time is of the essence, as Deadpool is a very hot property right now and Jackman is only getting older so his Wolverine work-out regime will only get harder as time goes on. So they need to strike while the iron is hot.
There's a small window in the coming few years to make a Deadpool and Wolverine team-up movie and it can be assumed that Jackman is waiting to make his decision on this until after he sees the reception, box office gross and profits LOGAN brings in next month.
