Fox is Reportedly Letting Their X-MEN Producer and Writer Make His Directing Debut With the Next Ensemble Movie

If you're like me then you found it refreshing when Fox decided to bring on new creatives to write and direct X-MEN: FIRST CLASS.

If you're like me you were happy to hear when Bryan Singer returned to the director's chair to helm X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST, co-written by producer Simon Kinberg.

If you're like me you were bored by the majority of X-MEN: APOCALYPSE, also directed by Singer and co-written by Kinberg.

Since X-MEN: APOCALYPSE was such a letdown, I've been advocating for Fox to go the route of X-MEN: FIRST CLASS for their next big X-Men ensemble movie by moving on from Kinberg as a writer as well as Singer as director. Seems like I got part of my wish but with a shocking caveat.

Now, according to Collider, Singer is allegedly out as director but Kinberg has written a screenplay and he will reportedly make his directorial debut with the next X-Men movie; which is rumored to be called X-MEN: SUPERNOVA featuring Jean Grey becoming the Dark Phoenix. (There are lots of other great X-Men comic book stories to adapt for film, by the way.)

Nobody really knows how Kinberg will perform in the director's chair but we've seen his written work as he's had co-writer credits on X-MEN: THE LAST STAND, X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST (with the First Class writer and director also as co-writers), X-MEN: APOCALYPSE and the most recent FANTASTIC FOUR reboot. (He's written other films but these are the most relevant to this post.)

And before you try to use Tim Miller as an example of a new feature film director comparison, it needs to be stated how DEADPOOL had a third of the budget an X-Men ensemble movie will undoubtedly have. Plus don't forget that Miller is the owner of Blur Studios and he has directed actors for motion capture work for dozens of video game cinematics and the THOR: THE DARK WORLD prelude.

Kinberg hasn't directed anything and while I will give him the benefit of the doubt by not pre-judging him now, I really wish Fox would have found a new writer and a different director if this is all true. Just being honest: I am not inspired by this developing news but Collider also covers their tracks in their report saying how Fox could change their mind tomorrow and find a new director. Even if this were to happen it still leaves us with a Kinberg script and that is still uninspiring.
