Thanos is coming.
We know this much from the two end credits teases after THE AVENGERS and AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON. But when you add his brief appearance in GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY, the casual moviegoer and Marvel fan really do not know much about the powerful cosmic villain. This will all change in 2018 when AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR releases in theaters.
Back in April 2016, Infinity War co-writer Christopher Markus hinted that the next Avengers movie will have a big focus on telling the story of Thanos.
"Everyone knows he’s coming, and yet [Thanos] hasn’t had... many scenes that have illuminated very much about him. You can count on a lot of scenes where we illuminate a lot about him very early [in Avengers: Infinity War]."
While Markus was being somewhat vague nearly a year ago, this topic has come up once again after Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige spoke with websites during their GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY VOL. 2 set visit. Feige said (via Collider) that Thanos will be the main character of AVENGERS: INIFINTY WAR.
"Thanos in Infinity War is – in a movie that has a lot of characters, you could almost go so far as to say he is the main character, and that’s a bit of a departure from what we’ve done before, but that was appropriate for a movie called Infinity War."
In an ensemble movie that will have literally every single Marvel hero seen in previous Marvel Cinematic Universe films, it's a cool twist on perspective. Infinity War sounds to be just as much, if not more, about Thanos than it will be about all the heroes who will face-off against him. That really does sound fantastic!
AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR is currently filming at Pinewood Studios Atlanta and releases on May 4, 2018.
