It's official... THE LEGO BATMAN MOVIE fell short of its domestic opening weekend projections. Those predictions ranged from as low as $60 million to as high as $75 million. It's predecessor, THE LEGO MOVIE, took in $69 million in its opening domestic weekend.
As we wrote yesterday, this is quite shocking for a highly anticipated animated LEGO movie that featured Batman and received critical acclaim in the majority of its reviews. Warner Bros. has made over $2.2 billion on all its films starring the Caped Crusader, so you'd think having Batman in this movie would help it to an even bigger opening than it had.
According to BoxOfficeMojo, THE LEGO BATMAN MOVIE finished No. 1 and took in an estimated $55 million, domestically. This isn't bad when you consider it had a reported production budget of $80 million. This is a small budget for an animated feature when you consider Disney's Pixar and Disney Animation Studios' movies are usually produced in the $120 million ranger and higher.
Overseas, THE LEGO BATMAN MOVIE brought in an estimated $37 million. This brings the movie's worldwide total to $96 million so far.
Now, the question is how good will the animated movie's long term success be in the coming weeks.
