Huge Worldwide Opening For LOGAN Further Proves There's a Big Audience For Mature Marvel Movies

If you're part of the small group who think superhero movie fatigue is ready to set in when each new movie opens in theaters, you'll be disappointed to know the opening weekend numbers of LOGAN have proven you wrong once again. Actors Hugh Jackman and Sir Patrick Stewart have made their final performances as Wolverine and Charles Xavier, respectfully, in LOGAN and the movie surpassed all box office expectations.

This is a clear sign the superhero movie genre is as strong as ever, if not stronger.

LOGAN is Fox's second R-rated Marvel movie in as many years and now the studio has a firm grip on mature rated Marvel movies giving fans a new option besides Disney's Marvel Studios films and the DC superhero movies produced by Warner Bros. DEADPOOL making well over $750 million worldwide was said to be an anomaly last year, but LOGAN further proves there is a big audience for mature rated Marvel superhero movies that aren't candy-coated for the much larger general audience.

During its Thursday night screenings, LOGAN beat out the domestic box office numbers of both the last two X-Men ensemble movies: X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST and X-MEN: APOCALYPSE. The only recent Fox-produced Marvel movie it did not beat out with its Thursday numbers was DEADPOOL.

Domestically, LOGAN took in an estimated $85.3 million to become March's No. 1 R-rated release of all-time. The movie beat the opening weekend grosses of X-MEN ORIGINS: WOLVERINE ($85M), X-MEN: APOCALYPSE ($65M), X-MEN: FIRST CLASS ($55M), X-MEN ($54M) and THE WOLVERINE ($53M).

Internationally, LOGAN brought in way more than anticipated! The third Wolverine solo movie took in over $152 million to bring its worldwide opening weekend total to $237 million. Shattering the projected worldwide opening numbers in the $150 million range.

The R-rated Marvel movie formula is in fact a proven winner after DEADPOOL and now LOGAN. Hopefully, Fox can continue this trend and produce more solid mature Marvel movies because an older audience is there and hungry for more.

Up next for Fox is DEADPOOL 2, which in is development and begins filming later this year for a 2018 release.
