Joss Whedon to Explore His Darker Side With an Edgy Take on a BATGIRL Movie

Warner Bros. is expanding their DC Extended Universe (DCEU) to include another Batman property. Variety is reporting Joss Whedon (THE AVENGERS, AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON) is in talks to produce, write and direct a BATGIRL movie.

Also, according to Entertainment Weekly's sources, this take of BATGIRL will be darker than fans might expect from Whedon as it will reportedly follow Barbara Gordon's story from 'The New 52' storyline, written by Gail Simone. In this comic story, Gordon recovers from her paralysis with an experimental surgery and regains her mobility, thus becoming Batgirl once again. Although, she is not all good in her head as she is haunted by the Joker and what he did to paralyze her; which is a direct result from 'The Killing Joke' comic story arc.

Some fans might think Whedon would bring a much lighter tone to the DCEU that is a contrast to its darker tone. Yet, this version for BATGIRL would pose a much different tone many may think he would bring to the DCEU and it sounds like it is more along the lines of the darker tone already established in the movie universe through MAN OF STEEL, BATMAN V. SUPERMAN and SUICIDE SQUAD.

With this news just coming out now, don't expect the movie to begin filming anytime soon because it sounds like Whedon may still have to develop its story and script first. Regardless, if you've wanted Whedon to direct a female-led superhero movie, you should be very happy about this news.
