Looks like Sony is back in business with a Spider-Man spin-off featuring his symbiote counterpart, VENOM. This is per Exhibitor Relations:
Watch out, Spider-man. VENOM is now part of the release calendar web as Sony has slated the Spidey spinoff for October 5, 2018.— Exhibitor Relations (@ERCboxoffice) March 16, 2017
Alex Kurtzman, writer of THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2 and director of THE MUMMY reboot will be at the helm of Sony's VENOM.— Exhibitor Relations (@ERCboxoffice) March 16, 2017
Sony partnered up with Marvel Studios to reboot Spider-Man into the Marvel Cinematic Universe with this summer's SPIDER-MAN: HOMECOMING, as well as its sequel already scheduled for a 2019 release. However, a past news report about VENOM from March 2016 (see post link below) stated it would not be a part of the MCU. (BOO!)
Also last year, news hit that Sony brought on writer Dante Harper to write the VENOM script but not much has been heard in the past year about the spin-off until now. Stay tuned because more information is sure to hit the web sooner than later.
VENOM is now scheduled to release on October 5, 2018.
UPDATE: The Hollywood Reporter has corroborated this news.
