Marvel Studios has four $1 billion films so far. This list includes: THE AVENGERS ($1.5B), AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON ($1.4B), CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR ($1.2B) and IRON MAN 3 ($1.1B). After this extended holiday weekend, GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY VOL. 2 has now moved past its origin film into sole possession of the studios' highest grossing film under the $1 billion tier.
This past weekend, GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY VOL. 2 took in an estimated $24 million bringing its total domestic take to $338 million. Only the four billion dollar films mentioned above have made more than Volume 2 here in the U.S.
Overseas, the sequel is still bringing in lots of box office cash and it has amassed just over $450 million.
Worldwide, GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY VOL. 2 sits at $788 million — 2014's GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY took in $773 million — and looks to push its way close to $850 million by the end of its box office run. Unfortunately, it looks like these bunch of a-holes won't be able to become the studios' fifth $1 billion movie, but it is still a very profitable film with Volume 3 already green lit by Marvel Studios.
