James Gunn is Ready to Drastically Expand Marvel's Cosmic Universe in GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY VOL. 3 and Beyond
The wait is over as GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY VOL. 2 opens in the U.S. today! Marvel Studios is so excited about the sequel they have let writer and director James Gunn start talking and teasing his future involvement beyond Volume 2.
Gunn has confirmed he will return to write and direct GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY VOL. 3, which will release sometime after 2019's AVENGERS 4 in 2020, or later. He also confirmed Volume 3 will be the final chapter of this iteration of the Guardians team, and will have a bigger role for Gamora, as well as disclosed that Adam Warlock will be in the third movie.
Another tidbit of info hinted at is how, after AVENGERS 4, the Marvel Cinematic Universe will open up into more of its 'Cosmic Universe' with Gunn seemingly taking the helm in a role similar to Joss Whedon or Russo Brothers overseeing the cosmic stories Volume 3 will set up for other Marvel Studios franchises on the big screen.
This was confirmed in Gunn's interview with BuzzFeed in the following pull quote:
"That success, of course, has come within the confines of Marvel's well-appointed, walled-off playground — and James Gunn is in no rush to leave it. He's an executive producer on 2018's Avengers: Infinity War, the first time the Guardians characters will engage with the larger MCU, and after writing and directing Vol. 3, Gunn will help the studio make more movies within its 'cosmic' realm.
"'[It’s] basically me saying to Kevin, 'OK, we're going to do Guardians Vol. 3, and then I think those characters should have his or her own movie, and then this character here, and then we should bring this person in,' said Gunn. 'I think that they just trust me in terms of my vision of the more space opera aspects of Marvel. … I love the freedom to be able to create that fully. That doesn't mean I never want to make an R-rated movie again, or make even a small movie. But right now, I feel really creatively fulfilled doing this.'"
With multi-film contracts expiring for lead actors portraying Iron Man, Captain America and Thor it makes sense to go more into the cosmic side once the Avengers do battle against Thanos in AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR and AVENGERS 4. Maybe Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans and Chris Hemsworth be back and re-sign to a new multi-picture contract, but a new focus on going cosmic makes sense and can give actors like Evans — who has shot a Marvel Studios movie as Captain America every year since 2010 — a much needed break.
