Well that didn't take long.
After a few days of doom and gloom in Star Wars solo (pun!) movie news — many fans and lots of reporters assuming the worst after Lucasfilm (allegedly) fired directors Phil Lord and Christopher Miller during filming of the HAN SOLO Star Wars standalone movie — the studio has found a more-than-capable replacement.
Director Ron Howard is stepping in to finish the movie. Here's Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy on the hiring of Howard:
“At Lucasfilm, we believe the highest goal of each film is to delight, carrying forward the spirit of the saga that George Lucas began forty years ago. With that in mind, we’re thrilled to announce that Ron Howard will step in to direct the untitled Han Solo film. We have a wonderful script, an incredible cast and crew, and the absolute commitment to make a great movie. Filming will resume the 10th of July.”
So there you go... all the online freak-outs and posts questioning Lucasfilm decision-making have been all shut the f**k up with this announcement. Howard is a fantastic fit to take over the helm and make the film more "Star Wars-y" as some reports claim were one of the biggest issues between Lord and Miller, Kennedy and co-writer /executive producer Lawrence Kasdan leading to the directing duo's exit just weeks before wrapping principle photography.
However, it remains to be seen if HAN SOLO will meet its release deadline on May 25, 2018 since the completion of filming has been pushed back approximately a month-plus now. Disney's D23 Expo and San Diego Comic-Con, both next month, should/could provide Star Wars fans more answers and information.
