Spider-Man Will be Called on to Lead the MCU into Phase 4 After AVENGERS 4

In just a few days Spider-Man fans everywhere will finally be able to see his first solo movie adventure based within Marvel Studios' Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) in SPIDER-MAN: HOMECOMING. Sony and Marvel Studios have been so confident in the newest iteration of Spidey that the studios already green lit a sequel last December and set its release date for July 5, 2019.

With the movie set to hit U.S. theaters on July 7, producers have been doing the press rounds for SPIDER-MAN: HOMECOMING and Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige has confirmed to io9 the 2019 sequel to SPIDER-MAN: HOMECOMING will in fact lead the MCU into its next slate of movies (Phase 4).

“So much happens in [the 3rd and 4th Avengers movies], as you can imagine, and so much is affected by it that we felt what better person to hold your hand and lead you into the next incarnation of the MCU, in a grounded, realistic manner, than Peter Parker? So, coming out two months after Untitled Avengers, [that’s what] much of what the next Spider-Man film will be about… It was purposefully done like this. Like how the events of Captain America: Civil War impacted Peter as he was dropped off by Tony and expected to go back to continue his sophomore year, how the hell are the events of Infinity War and Untitled [Avengers 4] going to affect him as he, yes, goes back to his junior year?”

So far the only films confirmed after AVENGERS 4 are the sequel to SPIDER-MAN: HOMECOMING and the James Gunn written and directed GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY VOL. 3, which has been hinted at to be possibly release in 2020.
