Warner Bros. Was Too Cautious Before WONDER WOMAN Released, Now Patty Jenkins Has All the Leverage

WONDER WOMAN director Patty Jenkins is not signed on (yet) for WONDER WOMAN 2 — which hasn't green lit but that is definitely happening after all the critical acclaim and its opening weekend numbers in the box office. And she has all the leverage in negotiating for the eventual sequel.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, it seems like Warner Bros. was coasting a bit too cautiously before WONDER WOMAN released, and wanted to see her opening weekend returns before moving forward with a sequel, which is why they were only projecting a $65 million opening in the U.S. The movie brought in over $103 million domestically and because of the studio's hesitation before the release, Jenkins has all the leverage for a new deal.

THR writes:

"Warners execs also may have been a bit unprepared for the level of success and acclaim Wonder Woman has achieved; initial tracking reports predicted Jenkins' $150 million-budgeted film would open to about $65 million domestic, solid but hardly a reason to begin planning a long-range strategy. And the studio had been focusing on putting together Justice League Dark, a supernatural team-up project, and Batgirl, a Joss Whedon-helmed film (among other Bat-offerings), as the likely next movies to go into production in the DC Comics universe."

Right now, JUSTICE LEAGUE is in post-production and AQUAMAN is filming in Australia but the studio needs to focus on giving Jenkins whatever she wants because, at the moment, her take on Wonder Woman is the best thing in the DCEU. Lead actress Gal Gadot is already signed on for a sequel as part of her multi-picture deal to be Wonder Woman.

Fans will see Wonder Woman return to the big screen in JUSTICE LEAGUE on November 17.
