WONDER WOMAN Draws $100.5 Million in its Domestic Opening; $223 Million Worldwide

The superhero genre got a lot stronger this weekend even though it took Wonder Woman over 75 years to get her own feature film. And the wait was worth it as WONDER WOMAN is a worldwide box office success!

Here in the states, WONDER WOMAN took in an estimated $100.5 million. The domestic opening for WONDER WOMAN is bigger than last fall's DOCTOR STRANGE ($85M), more than 2014's CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE WINTER SOLDIER ($95M) and 2008's landmark film for the genre, IRON MAN ($98M). But her opening was not as big as BATMAN V. SUPERMAN: DAWN OF JUSTICE ($166M), SUICIDE SQUAD ($133M) or MAN OF STEEL ($116M). However, WONDER WOMAN has received critical acclaim across the board where each of those previous DC Extended Universe movies were all panned by critics despite being financial successes, respectively.

Overseas, she brought in an estimated $122 million to bring her worldwide opening weekend tally to $223 million.

This is the biggest theatrical opening ever for a movie directed by a female so kudos to Patty Jenkins and her crew. WONDER WOMAN has set the bar high and now it's Marvel Studios' move as their first female-led superhero movie CAPTAIN MARVEL, starring actress Brie Larson, starts filming in early 2018 for its 2019 release.

With a tremendous amount of positive word-of-mouth, WONDER WOMAN should maintain her box office dominance for the next few weeks until Sony and Marvel's SPIDER-MAN: HOMECOMING hits theaters on July 7.
