SPIDER-MAN: HOMECOMING Has Second Biggest Domestic Opening Ever For a Spider-Man Movie; $257 Million Worldwide
When Sony and Marvel Studios announced their studio partnership for Sony's live action Spider-Man movie rights in early 2015, fans applauded because Spidey was coming into the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). After introducing actor Tom Holland as Peter Parker / Spider-Man in last summer's CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR there was a figurative standing ovation (and possibly real standing ovations in some theaters).
Now, the crowds have cheered some more as SPIDER-MAN: HOMECOMING has the second biggest domestic opening weekend ever for a Spider-Man movie, with an estimated $117 million. It sits only behind the $151 million opening weekend by SPIDER-MAN 3.
SPIDER-MAN: HOMECOMING destroyed the opening weekend numbers of Sony's last reboot attempt. THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN opened with $62M and THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2 brought in $91M. Both did not score as well as SPIDER-MAN: HOMECOMING in the review cycle, which is one of the best reviewed superhero movies ever on RottenTomatoes.com.
The earliest domestic opening projections had SPIDER-MAN: HOMECOMING in the $90M - $100M range and leading up to its release its prediction rose to the $110M-plus range. It definitely exceeded expectations all-around as positive word-of-mouth traveled fast online after its Thursday night screenings driving moviegoers to theaters over the weekend.
When compared to Marvel Studios' other MCU opening weekends, SPIDER-MAN: HOMECOMING ranks as their seventh biggest opening out of 16 total MCU movies. This could be seen as a sign of Spider-Man franchise fatigue, especially since he is Marvel's most popular comic book superhero, but it really wasn't since SPIDER-MAN: HOMECOMING faired so much better than the last two AMAZING SPIDER-MAN films. It really is a fantastic franchise recovery behind the creative power of Marvel Studios executives, their acute attention to detail and its production team.
SPIDER-MAN: HOMECOMING ranks behind the following MCU opening weekend numbers: THE AVENGERS ($207M), AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON ($191M), CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR ($179M), IRON MAN 3 ($171M), GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY VOL. 2 ($146M) and IRON MAN 2 ($128M).
Overseas, Spidey took in an estimated $140 million to bring its worldwide total to $257 million.
The movie has only opened in approximately 60-percent of all International markets so far and without any legit blockbuster movie competition in the coming weeks, outside of the Apes sequel, Spidey looks to have longterm box office success for the foreseeable future.
