If you've dreamed of becoming a Hollywood screenwriter, and/or a director, then you should know it is not easy work. The story development process can be intense to the point where a treatment — which comes after you have the basic story outline and plot points, but before the script writing phase — can be as little as 10 pages long (on average) to as many as 30 pages.
But when you're writer and director James Gunn, who has developed the scripts for both GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY and GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY VOL. 2, you take your work to the extreme. Gunn is currently developing GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY VOL. 3 and he recently shared with Collider how exhaustive his story preparation is.
“It’s more challenging in that respect writing the third movie than the second movie... I do an incredibly in-depth treatment for every movie. I think of writing a screenplay as creating the body of a human being and you’ve got to start with the skeleton, start with the bones, and you create the bones. You take a lot of time because that’s the actual base of the movie and if you screw that part up, later on down the line, you’re going to have a lot of mistakes. So by creating a really strong foundation for the story, that’s the most important thing. So I write a good treatment that’s probably about 70 pages long. It includes photographs and things like that. So that has been the way I’ve dealt with every movie and this one as well.”
You read that right... a 70 page treatment for Volume 3.
It's been previously reported how Gunn, when attending his initial meetings with Marvel Studios to land the GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY director gig, wrote a presentation packet that included a 20-page document for the movie's visuals, a 10-page methodology piece and a 42-page storyboard for the intro of the first film. That sounds exhausting but this is what it took for Gunn to land the gig.
Here's two glimpses of his storyboards from the 42-page portion of his pitch presentation with the studio.
