It's no secret Marvel Studios wanted to make a different Thor movie than what was seen in the previous two films when they hired director Taika Waiiti to helm THOR: RAGNAROK. They wanted to give Thor a somewhat soft reboot from his previous adventures in THOR and THOR: THE DARK WORLD by bringing more humor into the movie, using more color, giving the God of Thunder an adventure in the cosmos, getting him a haircut, having a badass female villain and bringing the Incredible Hulk into the equation.
All of this has made Marvel fans very excited for the release of THOR: RAGNAROK on November 3, and the first way-too-early box office prediction has arrived, via BoxOfficePro. They predict a $100 million domestic opening weekend for the third Thor film.
This number will change. Whether it goes up or down remains to be seen but THOR: RAGNAROK has dominated social media mentions since its trailer first debuted in April. Plus, that April trailer broke view records for any Disney trailer release netting 136 million views in its first 24 hours online. In other words, the anticipation and hype for this movie is very real.
At its current $100 million prediction, the studio has to be happy. Especially when you compare the domestic opening weekend for THOR, which was at $65 million, and THOR: THE DARK WORLD, at $85 million, the upward trend in opening numbers is definitely a good thing for the well-oiled Marvel Studios machine.
