LEGENDS OF TOMORROW: Getting Caught Up With Season 3

Writer Note: Sorry for the delay, Legends. I had a family emergency that kept me from joining the crew on our past three trips across time. But fear not, the journey continues with a delayed, but still covered in crazy excitement, recap of the past three episodes of LEGENDS OF TOMORROW

So, as you know, we’re three episodes into season three and is it just me or is “Free, free, free the beast,” the unofficial motto of the Legends. This season has once again kicked off with the usual crash and burn epicness we’ve come to expect from the crew of the Waverider. And with them I mean that crash and burn quite literally.

To recap, just in case, like me, you’ve completely forgotten just how disastrous things got at the end of season two: the Legends saved the day (of course), we got our Rip back (just to lose him again, this time on purpose), Sara became Captain of the Waverider officially (my bias remains, obviously I think this is the best and only choice, and it’s about bloody time), and then, because they can’t leave well enough alone, as soon as they leave Rip to create his own Time force, the Legends legit break time.

Like I mean there are dinosaurs running up and down the streets and historical figures crashing Spring Break frat parties kind of breaking time. Seriously, guys, we’re better than this... ish.

Shocker, things get so bad that Rip has to step in and clean up the mess the crew makes. He’s kind of a jerk about it. But isn't he always? It's like he forgets he's the most epic time rule breaker of them all (and I’m not even talking about his time with The Doctor). Using his new snotty time squad that, while I’m sure they’re just doing their job, just doesn't know what it's like in the field. Who knew simulations weren't the same as actually handling situations in real life? Our Legends that's who.

After Rory encounters Julius Caesar on the beach (totally felt like a Bill and Ted moment), the Legends find themselves once again operating outside the laws of the ruling time organization to try to save the day.

At this point, the crew has gone their separate ways (can we talk about Sara’s epic cure for boredom at her job, or the even more awesome storm she does), so we’ve got to get the gang back together. Saving the world is definitely not one of those things you just walk away from, so for the most part the Legends are happy to get back at it. Although Stein finally getting the life he’s been dreaming of since he had his time aberration daughter, makes his choice a little harder, but thankfully he remembers he owes Jax one. And the gang, sans Amaya is back in action.

Mayhem, mishaps, and malarkey all ensue, while the Legends figure out what their place in this new social time construct will be. And a couple of run-ins with Rip’s new Time Goons totally help remind them exactly what that place should be...on the stands, watching the game, not playing along at all.

The biggest issue we have, other than Rip’s super high strung new second in command, who seriously needs to leave Sara alone (there’s that bias again. Loved how equally matched their fight was though. About time Sara had a decent foil.), is that Amaya has lost control of her totem and the magic dwelling within it.

After returning home (i.e. leaving Nate behind without even a word as she returned to the 1940s) to protect her people and ensure her family line will lead to the modern day Vixen saving the world, Amaya finds herself slipping to the dark side as her fear leads her to anger, hate, and a whole lot of suffering for anyone who crosses her.

The team does their best to support her decision and move on, but of course, they can't get far without her when facing things like an actual Saber Tooth tiger escaping from P.T. Barnum’s circus (Jax and Ray as conjoined twins though, haha). When Ray’s shrinking ray (he still hates when we call it that) and all the other “logical” solutions fail, our fearless leader has to make an executive decision. With no other options before her, Sara hunts Amaya down and brings her back to join the crew for one last mission (talk about awkward moments in Nate’s life. Also, does anyone really believe “one last mission” will ever really be the last one).

Now, we all know there’s a bigger meaning to everything that happens (it’s called plot, it’s gotta go somewhere after all). And Amaya’s power slip and her burning desire to connect with someone else experiencing a similar magical life struggle is the perfect way to introduce Zari and the eventual Isis storyline the show is hopefully working towards by bringing her in. It would also be a great way to introduce Black Adam and Shazam too, but that may be just my wishful thinking taking over (but what a great way to get new fans for those characters before the movies happen, just saying).

So far, it's looking like season three is going to be a magical, mystical ride. Between the totem wielding women, the sorceress currently on their tails (what is her connection to Amaya and why did she say killing her would be killing herself?), and the impending return of one John Constantine (can we please get an Arrowverse Zatanna already), this season is shaping up to be filled with crazy twists and turns.

And speaking of turns, who is that big baddie Rip and his team keep hinting at?! What could possibly so bad that the Legends won’t be able to handle it? And why won’t Rip just tell them what it is so they can prepare for it? He knows their strengths and weakness, he has to have a plan, right? Who could it be lurking in the Legends future...or past?

Guess the only way to find out is to sit down, strap in, and hope the Legends don't ever get put in charge of ensuring programming runs on time!

'Til next week... stay legendary!
