By the time the credits roll in JUSTICE LEAGUE, he seems to have changed as you actually get to see Superman being the true hero he is... with a few smiles, too. This change for the character has made Cavill very happy, too, and he shared this enjoyment in an interview with the LA Times.
"I’ve always enjoyed the traditional, very classic view on Superman in the comic books ... I have also developed a very personal and protective relationship over this character, and it was just lovely to have the opportunity to smile and feel good.”
JUSTICE LEAGUE writer, and uncredited reshoots director, Joss Whedon shared the same views on Superman as Cavill when they worked together on JUSTICE LEAGUE.
"... I think there’s an enormous complexity to ... [Superman]. I know when I was working with Joss he and I saw eye-to-eye on some of the aspects of Superman. That paragon of hope. That ideal. That wonderful feeling of, ‘Oh, good, Superman’s here!’..."
The implication here is that Cavill's Superman is evolving into something less brooding and emo into a more traditional adaptation of the superhero in his next big screen appearance. Also, it sounds like many of the changes Whedon came in to re-write and reshoot was for this change in Superman's character from Snyder's version.
Right now, Whedon is in line to helm BATGIRL but seeing eye-to-eye with Cavill for Superman could imply a potential interest in helming MAN OF STEEL 2, which is still without a director. This is just my own guessing out loud here, but my other guess is that it does sound like a big part of the JUSTICE LEAGUE re-writes and reshoots might have revolved around Superman.
Cavill is all-in with Superman and this comment shows he's ready to explore his heroic character on the big screen again as soon as possible.
“There’s a wonderful opportunity to tell the Superman story. Now there is a fantastic chance to show Superman in his full colors and tell a very complex, character-driven movie that is based on story and have that wonderful sensation of hope and happiness. A feel-good movie with lessons laced in there as well.”
