LEGENDS OF TOMORROW Season 3 Catch-Up Review: Legends' Journey Gets Darhk

If you’ve been keeping up with the Legend’s adventures you know no matter how bright the Legends shine, they just can’t seem to step out of the shadows the Darhk causes. Damien Darhk that is. No matter how many times they beat him, the master of magic just keeps coming back, like a time traveling cock roach.

Okay, let’s recap this:

Things this season have been bad. Rip started his own time bureau. His new team hated his old team. His old team ignored the rules and went on their own adventures. And the new team threatened to bring them down. Totally what happens when you call someone else your best friend in front of your actual best friend. But the old team, AKA the Legends, aren’t just sitting idly by the phone waiting for Rip to call. Of course, that doesn’t mean he doesn’t need them to save him from time to time.

In 'Return of the Mack', the Legends find themselves in Victorian days trying to solve the case of a mysterious murdering vampire. But much to Rory’s 'Dracula' reading disappointment, there’s no actual vampire on the loose. Too bad, because a simple stake to the heart and some garlic around the neck would be a lot easier than dealing with demons, evil sorceresses, and the revival of the one villain that just won’t stay dead, Damien Darhk.

Rip seems to think that allowing Damien to come back might be the only way to draw out this season’s big baddie. But the Legends can’t support any plan that brings Damien back, and when he’s restored it doesn’t take long for the team to turn Rip in to the Time Bureau for breaking the very rules he put into place.

Ruthless, but isn’t that what Rip taught them.

Things get a little less complicated for the Legends as they return to their regularly schedule anomaly fixing programming in the episode, Helen Hunt. Bringing one of the most ancient beauties, Helen of Troy into classic Hollywood sounds like a great idea. But the problem lies in the fact that Helen brings discord and war wherever she goes. And it’s no surprise that the great studio battles of the 30s were suddenly the fault of the face that launched a thousand flicks…I mean ships.

This was a great moment for Zari, and a time for the Legends to learn something they’ve been missing. The bureau has to set time back exactly as it was. They have to put everything and everyone back in the same exact spot, but the Legends can make a difference. Maybe they can’t change time, but they can alter it enough that they can truly save someone. Which is exactly what Zari does, with the biggest and best Easter Egg we’ve had so far on the show with Helen being left on an island filled with warrior women, Themyscira to be exact! Can we possibly get a little Wonder Woman action at some point in the Arrowverse!?!!?

Things start to get all the more Darkher when Sara is almost killed by Damien and his daughter (who saw that one coming!). With Sara out of commission the team feels like they still need to go on a mission and do something productive so she doesn’t kill them all when she wakes up (and let’s be fair, she totally would have). The Legends end up in the 60s in Vietnam fighting alongside Rory’s dad against…Grodd.

Talk about a time anomaly. A psychic gorilla displaced and trying to start WWIII. Does it get any more out of sorts than that? It does when you see Rory acting super decent and talking his dad down from killing people, the act that turns him into the violent, distant man that raised him. Rory even gives up his lighter at the end of the episode. Is this the start of Rory truly embracing the hero life? What ripple effects will him helping his dad have on the timeline? Will his dad still die? Will he still become a villain? Nothing immediately seemed to change, but you have to wonder, did Rory cause a butterfly effect?

Speaking of butterfly effects, the plan to end to Grodd that Stein put into effect didn’t actually work. Much like with Darhk himself, the gorilla seems to just keep surviving and now once again a Legion of Doom is forming. A much worse one with Darhk and Grodd on the same side with the ability to time travel to anywhere they want. Add in Darhk’s daughter and Amaya’s granddaughter and there’s a lot of magic our Legends are about to face.

Sounds like a job for Constantine…

I’m going to keep throwing that out there until he finally shows up. But let’s face it, they’re going to need him if they’re planning on taking down Darhk, his magic allies, and a potential demon-like baddie that the Legends obviously can’t handle on their own.

Of course, the most important thing that happened is that Sara is okay. Sure, she had to get hurt eventually. Sure, it reminds us that she is human just like everyone else. Sure, it’s important to believe that anything can happen at any time. But let’s be real…nobody hurts Sara. And Damien Darhk and his team better watch their backs if they’re going to be targeting her. Can’t wait for the moment when they figure out how to contain all Darhk’s magic once more and Sara can take him out…hopefully once and for all.

As for the rest of the crew, things are progressing on the path to separate Jax and Stein. After their Freaky Friday moment (which kudos to both actors for the phenomenal job they did of playing each other), it became even more clear that it’s time for Jax to contain the power of Firestorm within himself. It’s hard to imagine that there will be a time when we won’t need a fusion to create Firestorm, but if it gets Stein home to his family and lets the Legends keep Jax and the power, then it needs to happen.

Now let’s talk future:

Damien Darhk. We know he’s the future, the past, the present, the end all be all problem for the Legends, but if he’s just a stepping stone this season for an even bigger baddie, is the crew prepared for that? They haven’t been able to get even slightly close to Darhk this season and with Grodd on his side there’s not much chance that the Legends are suddenly going to be able to overpower him. So, where do they go from here? Do they team up with the Time Bureau? Do they bring in Constantine? Is he enough against all of those forces? The future doesn’t look safe for the Legends. And while they are working together towards being the strongest team they’ve been yet, we’ve got to wonder how long will it before they break.

The one thing the Legends have always been able to rely on is hope. They spread it wherever they go. It’s their greatest power. But when your biggest strength is your light, what do you do when you get trapped by the Darhk?
