LEGENDS OF TOMORROW Season 3 Episode 4 Review: Phone Home

One of the best things LEGENDS OF TOMORROW does is take us on adventures through some of the most memorable moments throughout history. But what makes it even more fun is they do it through some of the most iconic source material ever. And this Halloween special was one of the best!

At the end of last week, we saw Little Ray Palmer in some major danger. But holy cow, did we underestimate how much.

Here’s the thing about Ray Palmer. He is, and always will be, the heart of the team. With new member Zari on board the WaveRider, Ray decides some team building needs to take place. Unfortunately for him, he disappears before he can get the team going on Two Truths and a Lie (super fortunate for everyone else. Does anyone really like icebreakers?). But nothing says team building like having to go back in time to save your teammate from imminent death.

When the crew gets back to 1988 (let the 80s time-travel movie references begin!), adult Ray returns since he hasn’t died in the time stream. The team fills him in on what happened and they begin a stakeout on Little Ray. We see super positive, incredibly nerdy, not aware he’s being bullied Little Ray as he makes his way home from school. Shoplifting and cutting class seem to be Little Ray’s new M.O. which freaks adult Ray out, until he finds out why he’s doing it…

Little Ray has a baby Dominator under his bed.

Gumball as he calls him.

This is when the classic E.T. references really begin. We see Gumball eating candy. Gumball in the closet. Gumball dressed up. And that’s just in the first few minutes of the baby Dominator being on screen.

Fact: Baby Dominators are hella cute. Double fact: Baby Dominators have all the powers of adult Dominators, but with none of the self control. So, basically, Little Ray is in some major trouble.

But, of course, that can’t be the only danger the team is in! These guys find trouble everywhere they go...also plot, man, it’s what makes a story great!

So, while Ray, Zari, Amaya, and Nate (who is totally into Ray’s mom which is only awkward for everyone involved) keep an eye on Little Ray, Sara goes to figure out why another time ship has appeared in 1988, while Jax and Mick try to figure out why Stein is building cross-time communicators and stealing the Jump Ship.

Sara’s issue first: Mama Dominator is here. If you think a bear is mad when her cub is threatened, try dealing with a super pissed off alien! Sara gets in a fight, that she doesn’t win (I guess I can accept that), though she does get the sass award for her comment about Reese's Pieces.

While, Sara is trapped in a cocoon, Mick and Jax discover the reason Stein is acting so weird is Lily is going into labor and he doesn’t want to miss the baby being born. So, since Mick has disabled the Jump Ship (with his always smooth smash and bash technique), they decide to steal the WaveRider to take Stein back to the future to see the birth.

This leaves the rest of the Legends without a ship (seriously, we talk on comms all day, guys, but the second you abandon the team you can’t be bothered to warn them you’re popping off?).

Meanwhile, Little Ray tries to run away because he overhears his mom talking to Nate and Amaya about how weird he is. Zari chases after him, but it’s too late as the agents at the end of last week’s episode show up and kidnap him.

As we reach the point where Little Ray was shot, things begin to spiral. Ray and Zari save Little Ray, who immediately demands they save Gumball as well. Ray tries to explain that Gumball is dangerous, but his childhood self won’t leave without his friend. While trying to break Gumball free, the agents show up and Gumball displays his mind control power. The two Rays argue over whether or not this situation will end in destruction, but Gumball simply recreates the scene he saw in Singing in the Rain, using the agents as his cast. It’s adorable to see Gumball and the Rays bobbing their heads as the agents sing and dance. At least, until Zari reminds them they have to get away.

As the Rays and Zari have their E.T. flying bike moment (thanks to Zari using her power...can’t wait to see more of that), Nate is making out with a Dominator he thinks is Ray’s mom, and Amaya is stuck saving his butt (don’t think that’s what she meant about being just friends).

When the team congregates in the woods, Mama Dominator shows up ready to retrieve her baby. Much to Sara’s disappointment Little Ray is there with Gumball totally ruining her rematch.

Little Ray struggles to give Gumball up in one of the most heartfelt moments ever. But, that’s what Legends does. It builds grand adventures and warms the soul at the end of every episode. It might be the only place a DC fan can safely feel happy (because you know how DC loves to make us cry...doesn’t anyone ever get a happy ending...or beginning for that matter).

While the team sets everything right in Little Ray’s life, Zari works to comfort him, letting him know that we all feel alone at times, but once we find the people meant to be in our lives, we don’t have to ever feel that way again (Welcome to the crew, Zari, you’re going to love it here).

Zari tries to convince Little Ray to go trick-or- treating, but he doesn’t want to go alone, so, the Legends fully suited up, join Little Ray (dressed as The Atom, the greatest superhero ever according to him) on his night out. I absolutely loved seeing Little Ray so strong and secure with his future teammates beside him. Also, Mick threatening bullies for their candy was hilarious. And we got to see the Isis costume!!! It’s such a great blend of the comic costume and that CW flair.

Speaking of those adorable moments: Lily naming her baby Ronnie...how many crying emojis can you use in one tweet because I might need a thousand more! Of course, that leads to Jax asking Ray to help him separate Firestorm. A moment we saw coming, but will never be able to deal with? You can’t break up the band, Jax!

So many questions are left unanswered this episode. And if Dominators are going to be able to pop in and out (like seriously, how did Gumball get there), of the show, how bad is this? Does this have anything to do with the mysterious problem the Time Bureau is preparing for? And there’s still that whole assassin thing we’ve got to deal with. This season of Legends may be all fun and games now, but things look like they are about to get pretty dangerous for our crew!
