SUPERGIRL Season 3 Episode 4 Review: The Faithful

Our episode starts out less superhero-ish. A drunk guy on a plane is projecting the outcome of his life (divorced, alcoholic, etc) onto a poor young guy sitting next to him. This guy comes back to be important. Of course, this is when they start experiencing turbulence after one of the engines go out and they prepare for impact. Luckily they all survive as the plane is lead into the water by Supergirl. Yep it's a flashback to the first episode where Kara has her first act of superheroism.

In the meantime, Sam is being a supportive mother and is at Ruby’s soccer match while trying to work when some weird chick comes up to her saying Ruby was special and to bring her to their community. Okay, she is rightly creeped out.

Samantha meets Kara and Lena at L-Corp. She is invited to a girl’s night by Kara. It's there that Kara sees the flyer that was given to Samantha. What grabs her interest is the kryptonian symbol on the flyer which she goes to investigate. James and Winn, bored by the lack of vigilante crime to fight, come with her. It feels like James and Winn are used as mostly token pieces this season. I hope they have a better storyline for the two or even separately.

Anyways, this ‘meeting’ is lead by the man saved in the airplane, Thomas Coville. And the meeting is about Supergirl. They have some type of cultish worship of Supergirl because she has saved each of them at one point. The odd thing is he knows the same prayer that Supergirl’s mother had for their deity Rao. Of course they're immediately wigged out especially Kara.

They look into this guy and find out he was on the same flight as Alex two years ago. But they're more concerned about he knows about Rao and Kryptonian.

Kara, Alex, Maggie, Samantha and Kara have a girl’s night where they gossip and there is another awkward moment where Alex says they're not having kids. This doesn't go unnoticed by Kara who had to leave to save a burning building. She arrives just in time to grab a kid who falls through the roof. It turns out he set this fire on purpose so she would save him. And he was encouraged by another member of the cult, Olivia. Yeah that escalated quickly.

Kara comes back to the community area and talks to Thomas as a reporter. Thomas almost immediately recognizes her as Supergirl. She tries to convince him she isn't a God but when that doesn't work she tells him to stop putting people in danger, using the influence she has over him.

Samantha is having trouble balancing work with taking care of Ruby which makes her feel guilty. Lena encourages her to do what she's doing because Ruby will understand that it is important.

Kara is upset by how Coville is twisting the religion that means so much to her but James tells her how Superman saved him, just like Coville feels she saved him. James wisely tells her that and Clark show up when they're needed and that's kind of a miracle.

Their heart to heart is interrupted by the update from Winn that Kryptonian probe powered by a betahedron that has information about Krypton, including their religion that was sent out to other plants and one landed on earth which Coville found. However, the betahedron is dangerous and was manipulated by Coville to use as a bomb. He brings it to a football stadium to try and blow it up and bring more followers.

Kara gets there but is weakened by the Kryptonite in the betahedron and even cuts herself revealing herself not to be a God. She creates a pool of lava and passes out. Alex pushes it in there right before it blows up, saving the stadium full of people.

Thomas is arrested for his part but he is still convinced Supergirl is a God, to her disappointment. He mentions how her eyes were clear when he rescued her and are now cloudy, which clearly strikes a chord with Kara. While he may be wrong about her being a God, it's clear he can see the change in her since the Daxamites attacked.

Kara, Alex, Lena and Samantha go to support Ruby in her play where they see her sing. While Ruby sings, Alex gets emotional and is forced to leave the audience. Kara is the one she emotionally confesses to that she tried to let go of wanting kids, but she can't. It looks like Maggie and Alex’s relationship might be coming to an end much sooner than expected.

The experience brings Kara back to praying as she did on Krypton, as does Hank and his father. Even though Kara didn't reach Coville, she is brought to peace by her faith.

Samantha’s dreams/daydreams are not getting any better. As she prepares for a bath, she sees a bunch of tattoos on her face and arms and is approached by a person who tells her one day she will reign. This person disappears as Ruby sees her mother crouching in a corner.

It's also revealed that when they destroyed the betahedron in the ground, some signal as sent to a planet and woke someone up from a pod. Could it be Mon-El or is it another Kryptonite who is the person reaching it to Samantha?

On a final note: I find it hard to believe that this Coville guy found out Kara was Supergirl before even Lena did. I mean, really? I suppose the glasses don't really fool just everyone
