Christmas 1992…Young Marty is looking to get a Beebo doll for his daughter when suddenly he’s sucked into the past where Vikings are taking over America. Now, we all know there’s no such thing as coincidence in television, so like Jax said, it’s kind of odd that they keep running into their older selves at the most inopportune moments, but here we are a week after having our hearts ripped out, finding ourselves on a rescue mission for the half of Firestorm we thought we would never see again. And it has to mean something more.
Obviously, the Legends are going to assume the person is the anachronism, and since it’s Stein they don’t see much else with the Sorrow Vision (man, wouldn’t that just be the absolute worst product in the world). But, in New Valhalla, Beebo is God.
Essentially the Tickle Me Elmo of the Arrowverse, Beebo, the furby-like creature, has created a spark in the Vikings that causes them to go on full scale invasion, taking over America and completely changing history. The Legends after saving Stein and realizing there’s so much more to the mission than they thought, bring in Ava from the Time Bureau and hope to be able to set things right.
But a detoxing Mick causes the plan to go south fast (thanks Leo for trying to put Mick on the right track, but did you have to do it at the expense of the mission?). Captured by the Vikings, Mick is put on a pyre as a sacrifice to Beebo. But Leo saves the day with his ice gun, which Ava quickly covers up claiming it is the power of Beebo speaking to them all. And they would have gotten away with it too…if it wasn’t for Amaya and the creepy, cute Beebo letting out a proclamation of his love.
As a fight breaks out, Damien and Nora show up pretending to be Odin and a Valkyrie (much to Ray’s both excitement and disappointment since that was his plan that everyone laughed at). With Beebo destroyed the Legends choose to retreat, knowing that they need to make a plan if they are going to take on the Darhks.
Not that anyone is in favor of the plan that Sara creates. So scared of losing anyone else, Sara tells them to take the Waverider and leave her behind. The team talks through the plan with her in order to point out all the failed logic in it (which isn’t hard to do with how horrible the plan to go alone is), and even though the plan isn’t much better with everyone else involved the Legends decide to take on the Darhks and attempt to save America.
Sara asks Ava to get help from the Time Bureau, but we learn that after they sent Rip to prison (yeah, way to slide that one in there on us), the Bureau started to fall apart and there aren’t any resources to help with things the Legends take on (because Damien Darhk is totally not worth sacrificing a few good men to the cause). The leader of the Bureau forces Ava to return home, and the Legends (as usual) head off to handle things alone.
Acting on their plan exactly as they imagined it, the Legends manage to take out Nora and almost have Darhk cornered when he chases after Nora and zaps them to the alternate dimension where they’ve been hiding with Mallus. Sara refuses to let them go and latches on to Darhk so she can hitch a ride. We get our first little glimpse of Mallus in the reflection in Sara’s eyes, and his final reveal is definitely going to be a huge moment. How Mallus knows Sara’s name and who the Legends are is a little nerve-wracking, and as he reaches out to take her the suspense becomes stronger and stronger. Could this be the moment that Sara’s new life really is taken away from her? Thankfully, no, because I don’t know if I could handle losing Sara, nonetheless doing so right after Stein. Lucky for us, Ava finally breaks a rule and comes back to save Sara (we’ve seen the looks, something is totally going to come from this!).
The Darhks may get away, but now we know what we’re up against…ish. Okay, not really at all. We just know it’s hella dangerous and we’re going to need some major help. Which works out perfectly since JOHN CONSTANTINE is in the Waverider at the end of the episode waiting to speak to Sara about the demon that knows her name. Not sure how Constantine got there. Not sure if Mallus is the demon he speaks of. Not really sure of anything at the moment. But who cares!! Constantine is here and he’s on the Waverider and things are practically perfect in every way.
Practically because not only did we lose Stein in that wonderfully, beautiful sacrifice he made (and refuses to undo, because let’s face it Martin Stein is the greatest human on the planet), but we’ve now lost our Jax too. Unable to move on from the loss of Stein, Jax knows he needs to take a break, and Stein’s words and the quote of the night (“If I had one wish it wouldn’t be to prolong my life, it would be for you to live yours) keep ringing in Jax’s ears as he leaves the Waverider behind him indefinitely.
It’s going to be weird to have a Legends crew without a Firestorm. I was hoping for someone new to fuse with Jax, or a way to save Stein (I mean we get a new Snart every season. That’s not a complaint, please don’t ever stop doing that, writers), but it looks like for now the radioactive man is taking a leave of absence. Jax’s closing remarks to Sara definitely set up that he’ll be back, but who will we see in the meantime?
Will Constantine become enough of a permanent fixture to fill that void? Will we get The Ray back to be with his partner, Leo? Who knows. But come January this season is going to get intense and fast, and let’s just hope that the Hellblazer is enough to take on the demons lying within and without. Of course, if they wanted to bring in Zatanna to help I wouldn’t be mad about it. Late Christmas present, CW? A girl can dream right?
'Til January, Legends, enjoy your break, and remember “kicking ass is how we heal.”
