RUNAWAYS Season 1 Episode 8 Review: Tsunami

Even when RUNAWAYS is treading water it does it with style I’ll give it that. With Victor on the edge of death, this week’s episode picked up right where last week’s finished with Chase and Janet panicking over exactly what to do. Naturally rather than calling the police Janet called in Pride as Chase was ushered out the room to assurances that his old man would be okay. Leslie brought in Frank and his magic healing gloves, much to the bemusement of the others, in an attempt to save Victor without having to alert Jonah to their crisis. But sure enough when Frank was unable to get the job done, Tina, ever the good little Pride-ling, called in the big man himself.

There has been an interesting development here with regard to Frank’s relationship with Pride, one that I may have overlooked, with references being dropped here and there that seem to imply Frank had a closer connection to Pride sometime in the past before the Yorkes memory serum was used to wipe his mind. This would explain why Frank can only partly remember catching Leslie in bed with Jonah, but also has deeper implications that Frank may not be quite as innocent as previously presented. Karolina, on seeing her dad in deep with Pride this week anguished about him being “the only good one”, a clue I feel to the fact he may have been anything but.

Anyway, the main thrust of this week’s episode was simple. Jonah presented Pride with a choice. Seeing as Victor was key to his plans, someone had to be sacrificed via the same “box” tech that they used to regenerate him and being as they were pressed for time, it had to be someone in the room. What followed next was something akin to Carnage by way of Twelve Angry Men as the parents all argued amongst themselves over who should go in the box. It was solid drama, sometimes erupting into violence, as true feelings were revealed and the lengths they would go to protect the ones they loved were tested. Ultimately though this went nowhere as when Jonah insisted on Janet sacrificing herself to make good the damage she had caused and then Robert insisted he take Janet’s place as he had given her the gun, Tina brought it all to a close by using her staff to destroy the box to spare her husband. It was then Jonah revealed he could seal Victor within the remaining box in a sort of suspended animation, stopping the clock on his imminent death until such time they could figure out a way to regenerate him later. Why he didn’t just do this right away, I don’t know. Perhaps it was all meant to be a test? One consequence however, was that Jonah was left with only one regeneration box, something that might prove to be significant in the final episodes of this season.

Teen drama ensued with Chase calling first Gert then Karolina because he “didn't want to be alone”, the girls agreeing to check in on him to see if everything was okay. Gert took great satisfaction in the fact that Chase had called her first, but ultimately all the teen angst driven frivolity was paving the way for Gert to find an excuse to take her dinosaur - which still hasn’t been named Old Lace yet! – out for a walk, just in case Pride tried something. And by God did this episode not shy away from delivering on CG dinosaur goodness as Old Lace was all over this episode. Sneaking into the Stein’s property with the girls, hopping fences and skipping across rooftops, just in case they needed her in the event of a confrontation. It was actually a damn shame there ultimately wasn’t. But I’m sure Old Lace will be put to good use in the finale, pending on her being put away for an episode to save on that CG dinosaur budget.

Molly, having told the Yorkes to bite her for leaving her with her distant relative Graciela (not Gabriella as I mistakenly wrote last week) found herself quickly bonding with the older woman over their obvious shared connection to her parents. And whether the Yorkes knew it or not, it turned out to be a blessing in disguise for Molly as Graciela had a missing piece of the puzzle that is what happened to Molly’s parents. An envelope left with Graciela from the Hernandez’s to be passed on to Molly contained a key and a clue which led Molly to a train station that held a particular memory of her parents. There she found a locker that matched the key and inside was a VHS cassette, presumably a final message from Molly’s parents to their daughter which may FINALLY explain all that’s going on. But for now we were left with a gag, as Molly had no idea what the tape even was. God I feel old.

Nico finally got Alex to admit to the fact he knew more about Amy’s death then anyone had previously thought and a huge part of the puzzle fell into our lap. Turns out Amy was as much of a whiz as her mother, even going so far as to hack into Wizard’s systems to see what her mom was up to. Turns out this was the worst thing she could have ever done, possibly finding out about Pride a full two years before the others did. When Nico eventually found her sister’s phone, which had been missing since the night she died, she left it on charge before meeting with Alex and the others. When the “Runaways” came together, Chase decided the thought of losing his dad was too much and he destroyed Alex’s laptop with the incriminating videos of their parents on, possibly ruining any hope they had of putting their folks away. Had Nico stuck around with her sister’s phone though, she would have seen the last message sent to Amy on the night she died. Coupled with a flashback to the night in question, we saw that Amy received an anonymous message that “he” knew, before she was caught trying to run away by an unseen man entering her room. I know who I think it was, I think the clues have all been there and I’m only now seeing them, but it shouldn’t be long now before Amy’s killer is finally revealed.
