Many fans, including this one, were very upset that Marvel Studios would allow Sony to make a VENOM movie without the use of Spider-Man, since the two of them are so closely tied together in comic book canon. Without the alien symbiote first attached itself to Spider-Man, then we would have never got the Venom comic fans have known, and loved, today.
But a new twist is all of this might be in play as a new report seems to imply how VENOM might just have some connectivity to the MCU. The Youtube series, Collider Heroes, is reporting that Holland has been on the set of VENOM for a couple of days... but not as Spider-Man. It seems he might be making a cameo as Peter Parker.
Collider Heroes says:
“Tom Holland was on set filming scenes on Venom for at least two days as Peter Parker. Ok, so I’m not saying that Spider-Man is in the film. When I say that Tom Holland’s Spider-Man is in the film, I’m saying ‘Peter Parker is in the film. This is a cameo. I don’t know what it is. I didn’t read the script.”
Is this a loophole giving Sony's VENOM a very loose connection to the MCU? If true, it certainly sounds like it. As long as Parker is in it, the VENOM plot line can take better shape even in this adaptation of the source comic book material, 'Lethal Protector.'
If this is true, the next question is if Venom will be seen in the MCU fighting Spider-Man in one of his solo films? Maybe, just maybe, VENOM sets things up for the sequel to SPIDER-MAN: HOMECOMING. This would get fans of these two characters, including this one, very excited. Although, don't get too excited yet because this is all just speculation, too.
VENOM releases in the U.S. on October 5.
