Sony Moving Forward With SPIDER-MAN: INTO THE SPIDER-VERSE Sequel and an Animated Female Spin-Off Movie

Sony Animation is officially building their Spider-Man Animated Movie Universe. They must be very confident with their upcoming release of SPIDER-MAN: INTO THE SPIDER-VERSE as The Hollywood Reporter states the studio is moving forward with its sequel as well as an animated female-led spin-off movie.

SPIDER-MAN: INTO THE SPIDER-VERSE does in fact look really good visually and stylistically, but for the studio to fast-track a sequel and a spin-off several weeks before release is an indication the movie will be a big hit.

THR writes:

"Joaquim Dos Santos, known for his work on cartoon series Avatar: The Last Airbender and, more recently, Netflix’s Voltron series, has been tapped to direct the sequel. David Callaham, who penned The Expendables and worked on Wonder Woman 1984 as well as Zombieland 2, is writing.

"At the same time, Lauren Montgomery, who also worked on Voltron and co-directed animated movies Batman: Year One and Superman/Batman: Apocalypse for DC, is in negotiations to helm an untitled Spider-centric project that will gather the female heroes in the Spider-Man universe of characters in one adventure. Bek Smith, who wrote episodes of the CBS show Zoo, will pen the script."

It seems more than obvious to say that the female-led Spidey spin-off will feature Gwen Stacey's Spider-Gwen, a.k.a. Ghost-Spider.

SPIDER-MAN: INTO THE SPIDER-VERSE releases in the U.S. on December 14.
