If social media was a thing back in 1999, then Star Wars fans would have had a field day complaining about Jar Jar Binks. Yet, even without the Internet actor Ahmed Best has mentioned multiple times that he took a lot of shit from the fans, as well as from the media, and suffered deep depression and suicidal thoughts. Thankfully, it wasn't as amplified as it could have been via today's social media. Best is doing much better today, by the way.
After making appearances in the Star Wars animated series THE CLONE WARS, it seems like Lucasfilm could be ready to bring the Gungan back in the upcoming Disney+ streaming series starring actor Ewan McGregor's Obi-Wan Kenobi.
This comes from the site MakingStarWars who have had lots of confirmed scoops, but as with all scoops this one needs to be taken with a grain of salt until corroborated by one of the big Hollywood trade news sites. MSW writes:
"I’m told 'Ben' Kenobi crosses paths with his old friend from Naboo, Jar Jar Binks. Early work has been conducted for the CGI Gungan’s return to Star Wars. Jar Jar has a beard to reflect where he’s been and what his life has been like since they were all deceived by a great lie that ushered in the first Galactic Empire. Kenobi will not be the only bearded character this time.
"Because the series hasn’t filmed yet, I’m treating this as a rumor. That said, I believe it to be accurate and on the way.
"I’m told there is a sequence where the bearded Jar Jar Binks and Obi-Wan talk about the past. There will be Jedi/Gungan beard time coming soon to the series.
"It isn’t confirmed that Ahmed Best is returning as Jar Jar Binks. I’m assuming and hoping he is."
Ever since the outrage for Jar Jar, the passing of time has healed many wounds and Jar Jar has become more and more beloved over recent years. Having him appear in KENOBI seems like a fun callback and meesa okieday with it.
KENOBI will begin filming very soon and is expected to release sometime in 2021.
Side note: Until an official title is confirmed, I'm going to refer to the series simply as KENOBI... although I think titling it BEN KENOBI is absolute perfection.
