SUPERGIRL Season 5 Episode 12 Review: Back to the Future, Part 2

Never a quiet visit home. With Winn still with his old team as he waits for his ship to recharge, he joins in for Karaoke night (and a rendition of Africa courtesy of Kara and William). Their quiet night doesn’t last long as they get a 9-1-1 from the DEO just as William asks Kara on a date. Not the best timing.

At the DEO, the team is helping Brainy fight against several drones that have attacked him. They destroy the drones as a song starts to play over their comms. Inside, Brainy determines that Toyman, Evil Winn, has uploaded himself into a laptop before he blew up the building and that laptop was brought to the new DEO so he now has control over the DEO.

Evil Winn pops up on the screen. He ordered them to lower the DEO’s firewall so he can access the whole wide web. He brings the DEO into lockdown mode so I’m sensing he’s pretty serious about this since he uses the laser security system to attack them. Brainy manages to kick him out of the command center temporarily. Talk about cybercrime.

Winn needs time to work on a kill code for the program the Toyman is using and get him out of their system. Alex wants Supergirl to fly out all the tech that Toyman can hack but a call from Lex kills that idea as he says this new DEO has Kryptonite in place so she’s unable to. This leaves Alex and her team to do this themselves. This also prompts Brainy to call Lex who admits he had a theory that Toyman would upload himself and he wants the code he used so he can in turn use it against Leviathan. Tsk tsk, Brainy.

The team prepares to split up with Brainy keeping Toyman back while Winn and Kara look for the server Toyman is on downstairs. Winn senses Lex’s involvement and Brainy assured him he has it under control.

Meanwhile, Lena goes to see Andrea who is busy trying to perfect Obsidian Platinum so people can live virtually. Lena tried to tempt Andrea into letting her help work out the kinks, but Andrea feels it would damage their friendship. This is just a ploy to get Non Nocere uploaded to the Obsidian Lenses and when Lex pushes, Lena allows him to help her.

Alex works on getting all technology disconnected from the internet but misses a few flying monkeys that the Toyman controls which are heading straight for Winn and Kara.

Winn and Kara get closer to finding the server when Winn comes face to face (or computer screen) with his father. They believe it is an obvious trick from Toyman, Winn’s father tells him that 80 percent of his subconscious was uploaded but that what Evil Winn wants to do is mouth more heinous. Winn refuses to believe him and rejects his help. Supergirl tries to get him to be open minded about his father changing but Winn wants to kill the program and shut them both down.

Alex finds out the program she installed to track Lex’s every move has been uninstalled. She immediately goes to Brainy and demands to know what he was doing. He claims he was trying to protect her and that Lex would find out what she was doing. She drops the subject but is still suspicious about his intentions.

Lex is trying to charm Gemma Cooper into convincing Andrea to let Luthor Corp partner up with them to improve their technology. Gemma, in turn, practically forces Andrea’s hand into teaming up with Lena.

Winn and Supergirl reach the server but aren’t able to shut it down. Winn has to try and enter it digitally and shut it down from there. However, before he can go all Tron, Alex and her team find Lexosuits that the Toyman has inhabited. They’ve officially hit Defcon 1. Supergirl leaves Winn to take care of inputting the kill code while she helps to keep the Lexosuits from escaping.

Winn manages to defeat evil Toyman with help from his virtual father. His father manages to hold back Evil Winn as Winn enters the kill code and successfully destroys them both and stops Toyman from going into the internet. Somewhat bittersweet since he realizes his father did change.

With the latest crisis fixed, Alex decides to leave the DEO. She feels like she can’t work there with Lex in charge. She decides to work alongside J’onn in the tower instead. Brainy says he will stay at the DEO to pass along information about Lex (lie!). Winn prepares to leave. After finally riding his demons about his father, he decides to take on the moniker Toyman and reclaim it for himself.

After rejecting William’s date because she feels like she can’t be in a relationship without lying, Kara can’t help but wonder what would’ve happened with Lena if she told her the truth. While she dwells on this with Alex, a knock on the door brings her Mr. Mxyzptlk with a possible answer.

We know that his powers may be able to give her a glance at her making a different decision, but will it bring her and Lena closer together or will it still inevitably cause the dissolution of their friendship?

With Alex resigning, Brainy becomes the director of the DEO. When this gets back to the team, will they finally wise up to Brainy’s partnership with Lex or turn a blind eye? There’s a certain amount of trust to be expected but it’s become clear that Brainy (although he thinks he’s doing the right thing) is working for the enemy.

Speaking of the enemy: It seems that Lex is unaware of Gemma being a member of Leviathan but she knows about him. She even speaks to another member to have them tell “The Anointed One” that they have the Luthors Where they need them. Leviathan is continuously one step ahead. It seems that the Luthors will need help from the Superfriends and soon if they’re actually going to defeat them.
