It’s the movie fans of Marvel and the Marvel Cinematic Universe have been dreaming of happening ever since Disney bought 20th Century Fox, and it is finally here! And DEADPOOL & WOLVERINE delivers the goods.
Now let me be frank, this review isn’t an easy one to write due to the fact that there are so many surprises and so many funny things in it, so a lot of this will be vague and generalized to save all the best reveals for you while in your theater seat.
In typical Deadpool movie fashion this threequel is more of the same. The film starts with Deadpool narrating at the beginning with a big action sequence, and then you go back to before that action scene to get to know how he got to that point. And it’s general chaos in typical Deadpool fashion.
If you’ve seen the trailers then you know the gist of the story… in the DEADPOOL 2 end credits he travels back in time changing events in history using Cable’s time device. Doing this caught the attention of the TVA, but their pursuit of Deadpool is not why you think. There’s a bigger issue at hand and they make an offer to Deadpool. And as Deadpool’s ego does, he believes their need for him is because he’s now the “Marvel Jesus.”
Most of the events that occur in this movie are due to the fact of Deadpool’s inability to play nice and do what he’s told as he’ll just do it his own way instead. This includes bringing Wolverine into the fray. And the montage involved in Deadpool finding this particular version of Wolverine in the multiverse will have many fans losing their shit in theaters… but those details are for you to see for yourself.
While Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman are having a blast being together in the movie, one thing really stood out about this threequel when compared to the last two. The actual 'Merc with a Mouth' title from the comics. Reynolds, the director, the writers, and Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige really leaned into that aspect of the character from the comics. Deadpool is talkative to an annoying extent where everyone wants him to shut the fuck up already and tells him this a lot. It’s a little character note surely brought into the production by this creative team and it’s great to see throughout as it’s a big part of his character from the comics.
The action is plenty and while it’s the usual fun kind of Deadpool action we have seen in his past movies, there is a tremendous amount of blood and gore. Really, a shocking amount for the simple fact this is a Disney/Marvel movie and the first in the MCU with an R-rating. They don’t hold back and there’s body parts flying everywhere.
Obviously, the movie is funny and it’s not that type of humor you’ve seen in the MCU before because it’s Deadpool funny with lots of swearing and vulgarity. It’s not over-the-top but it’s also Deadpool so it is a bit over the top because that’s who his character is. You’ll be laughing a lot.
Now let’s touch on the cameos. It’s a lot. And it’s not like you’ll be disappointed with them either because there’s a few that’ll have you thinking “No fucking way they just did that?!?”
In the end, the story does in fact have heart. If there’s one thing we have learned from the last two Deadpool movies it’s that each of those films had heart in it. Deadpool may be brash, childish, annoying, violent, vulgar, and funny but he does care for others who care for him. While that’s a small group of people in his life, it’s his everything and what he does always has a basis for those closest to him.
DEADPOOL & WOLVERINE is a fantastic ride to take and worthy of multiple viewings to catch all the finer details that will surely be missed after the first viewing. There should be no doubt that Deadpool is in fact a big key to bringing mutants into the MCU and the floodgates are now open for Marvel Studios to expand the MCU with many more mutants in years to come.
